Driving in the UK with a US license
For Great Britain the answer comes straight from GOV.UK: twelve months, no permit. The catch is on the left side of the road.
Do you need an International Driving Permit there?

Driving in United Kingdom: the full rulesA visitor can drive in Great Britain on a full, valid US license. GOV.UK's licence checker, answered for a visitor whose license comes from a country outside Europe, says you may drive any small vehicle listed on that license, cars and motorcycles included, for 12 months from when you last entered Great Britain. No international permit is required, and the United Kingdom, a party to both the 1949 and the 1968 conventions, does not ask for a translation of an English-language license. Great Britain means England, Scotland and Wales; Northern Ireland has its own licensing authority. The State Department's page sends drivers to the same GOV.UK service and reminds them that traffic drives on the left and that penalties for driving under the influence often include prison. A rental company may still set its own conditions, such as minimum age or a credit card in the driver's name.

How the twelve months run
The count starts from your last entry into Great Britain, not from your first ever visit, which is how GOV.UK words it. The mini-tool on this page gives the last day for an arrival date. People who move to Great Britain are treated differently: the same GOV.UK service asks residents a different set of questions, and an exchange or a British test may be needed. The page also covers lorry and bus licenses, which follow other conditions.
Left-hand traffic and roundabouts
Most rental cars in Britain are right-hand drive and many have manual gearboxes. The State Department notes the orange SOS call boxes found every half mile on motorways. The legal side is simple here, so preparation goes into the driving itself; the rental guide covers age limits and insurance questions to settle before booking.
