Who is behind US IDP Guide

Radif Partners

Independent publisher of a country-by-country guide to driving abroad with a US license: International Driving Permit rules, the 1949 and 1968 road traffic conventions, rental ages and insurance

US IDP Guide is published by Radif Partners, a company that builds free reference tools on public rules. This one exists because the question "do I need an International Driving Permit?" has a different answer in each country, and the answers people find first often come from websites that sell look-alike permits. We read the official texts and put them side by side, with their dates.

What the site does

The country checker gives, for any destination, what a US license holder needs and how long the license counts, with the State Department's words. The trip planner combines up to three countries with your dates. Smaller calculators give the last day to apply for a permit, its cost, its end date and the warning signs of a fake. Thirty destinations have a page of their own.

Where the facts come from

The State Department's country information pages, through its public data feed; the United Nations Treaty Collection for the conventions; USAGov, AAA and AATA for the permit itself; and the national texts of Italy, France, Germany, Great Britain and New South Wales. Every fact carries its source and the date we read it. The method page describes the checks.

What we are not

We are not AAA, AATA, the State Department or any foreign authority, and we work for no rental company or permit seller. We issue nothing and give no legal advice.

How the site is paid for

Nothing is sold here and there is no affiliate link. If advertising is added one day, it will never sit inside a tool, and it cannot use what you type, which never leaves your browser.

Tell us when something is wrong

Countries change their rules and the State Department updates its pages. If a fact differs from the official text, write to contact@usidpguide.com with the page. The editorial policy explains how a correction is made and dated. The site has 41 pages of tools and guides.
