Driving in Austria with a US license: IDP or translation
Austria states the rule plainly: a US license is not enough on its own. Two documents can complete it.
Do you need an International Driving Permit there?

Driving in Austria: the full rulesA US driver's license alone is not sufficient to drive in Austria, according to the State Department's Austria page, updated on September 10, 2026. It must be accompanied by an international driving permit or by an official translation, which can be obtained in the United States from AAA or in Austria from the automobile clubs ÖAMTC or ARBÖ. US citizens who take up residence must obtain an Austrian license six months after arriving. Austria is a party to both the 1949 and 1968 conventions. Two other rules cost visitors money: a vignette, the motorway tax sticker, must be displayed on the windshield, with a fine of 120 euros paid in cash on the spot for a car without one, and winter tires are required between November 1 and April 15 depending on the area, with car insurance void after an accident on a car without them.

Permit or translation
For a short visit, the permit from AAA or AATA is the simplest of the two: it covers Austria and most neighbors at once. A translation from ÖAMTC or ARBÖ suits someone already in Austria who has no time to get a permit mailed from the United States. Either one must travel with the license itself. A trip continuing into Germany, Switzerland or Hungary meets three different rules; the trip planner lists them side by side.
Rental contract limits
The State Department warns that driving a rental car into a country listed as prohibited in the contract can lead to arrest, fines or a charge of attempted theft. Check the list before crossing east.
