Driving in Poland: the full rules

You must have a US driver's license and an international driving permit to drive in Poland, according to the State Department's Poland page, updated on August 20, 2026, and US citizens cannot obtain permits in Poland. Anyone who stays more than six months and keeps driving must obtain a Polish license. Poland is a party to both the 1949 and 1968 conventions. Polish law has zero tolerance for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and prison sentences for DUI or for accidents caused by impaired drivers range from two to twelve years. Fines for traffic violations can be substantial, and non-residents are expected to pay the officer when the ticket is issued, in cash and local currency. The page notes that Poland has the fourth-highest road fatality rate by population in the European Union and that driving after dark is hazardous on narrow, poorly lit roads.

Cash for fines

Paying in cash, in zloty, at the moment of the ticket is an expectation for non-residents. Keep some local currency in the car. A missing permit is one of the offenses that can lead to such a fine, on top of whatever caused the stop.

Roadside help

The Polish Automobile Association runs a multilingual assistance line around the clock; its number is on the State Department page. Roads are improving but are often under repair. For a trip that crosses into Czechia or Germany, the same permit covers both. The validity calculator checks that it lasts until your return.
