Driving in Czechia: the full rulesTo drive in the Czech Republic, visitors must have an international driving permit to accompany a US license, according to the State Department's Czechia page, updated on December 11, 2025, which notes that the permit is available from AAA in the United States. Without it, a driver stopped for a traffic offense may get an additional fine, and an insurer may deny a claim after an accident. Czechia is a party to both the 1949 and 1968 conventions, as a successor state since 1993. The country has zero tolerance for alcohol: any detected alcohol, however slight, is illegal and usually leads to an immediate fine and possibly criminal proceedings, and police can test any driver they stop. All passengers must wear seat belts. On two-lane roads and in small towns, surfaces are uneven and markings irregular, and cobblestones and streetcars in historic centers are slippery when wet.

The insurance risk
Of all the consequences of driving without a permit, a denied insurance claim is the one that can cost the most, since it shifts the full cost of an accident to the driver. Rental companies that rent to US license holders often ask for the permit for this reason. Apply in the United States before leaving; the application guide gives the deadlines.
Breakdowns
After an accident or breakdown on a highway, the warning triangle goes at least 100 meters behind the car, and 50 meters on other roads. The police number is 158 and emergency services answer on 112. Neighboring Poland and Austria also require the permit or a translation, so one permit covers a Central European loop.
