Driving in India: the full rules

To drive in India you need a valid Indian driver's license or a valid international driver's license, according to the State Department's India page; a US driver's license is not valid on its own. For a visitor, that means a permit from AAA or AATA, obtained before leaving the United States and carried together with the US license. India has been a party to the 1949 Geneva convention since 1962. The page is blunt about conditions: roads inside and outside the big cities are often poorly maintained and congested, main roads frequently have only two lanes with poor visibility and few warning signs, and divided highways may have local traffic driving the wrong way, often without lights. Traffic drives on the left. The page also recommends using vehicles with seat belts, which are uncommon in three-wheel taxis and in the back seats of many cars.

Permit, then caution

The permit makes driving legal; it does nothing about the conditions the State Department describes. Many visitors hire a car with a driver instead, which also avoids the insurance questions a foreign driver faces after an accident. If you do drive, apply in time: the application guide shows the last day for each method.

Long stays

The permit lasts one year from its start date and cannot be renewed, so a resident relying on it would need a new one each year from the United States. Residents usually obtain an Indian license instead. The rule is the same for the UAE in one respect: residents there must hold a local license.
