Driving in Mexico with a US license
Mexico is the one big destination where the license is not the hard part. The insurance is.
Do you need an International Driving Permit there?

Driving in Mexico: the full rulesUS driver's licenses are valid in Mexico, according to the State Department, and USAGov says plainly that US citizens visiting Mexico do not need an international driving permit. What Mexico does require is Mexican car insurance for every vehicle: a US policy is not enough on its own, and an uninsured driver involved in an accident, even a minor one, may be arrested. Only US citizens or legal permanent residents may drive a US-registered vehicle in Mexico, and the car needs a valid plate and a current registration sticker; temporary paper plates are refused at the border. Mexico has joined neither the 1949 nor the 1968 road traffic convention, which is why its acceptance of the US license comes from its own rules rather than from a treaty. The State Department advises using toll roads, marked with a D, rather than free roads.

Insurance is the document that matters
After an accident in Mexico, the question police ask first is whether the driver is insured in Mexico. Rental cars come with the mandatory coverage; drivers who cross with their own car buy a Mexican policy before or at the border. Keep the policy with the license. For an accident without injuries, the State Department suggests calling the insurer directly, since adjusters often come to the scene.
On the road
Toll highways (cuota) are better patrolled than free roads (libre), and the Green Angels, a government roadside service, answer on 078 with bilingual staff. Cell coverage is patchy in rural areas. Mexico shows how the conventions do not decide everything: it is in neither, yet it accepts the US license, while Vietnam, a 1949 party, accepts neither the license nor the permit.
