Driving in the Netherlands with a US license
The Netherlands accepts a US license for visitors. The difficulty is sharing the road with bicycles.

Driving in Netherlands: the full rulesA valid driver's license issued by a US state motor vehicle department may be used in the Netherlands while you are in tourist or visitor status, according to the State Department's Netherlands page, updated on August 13, 2026. No international permit is listed. The Netherlands has been a party to the 1949 convention since 1952 and to the 1968 convention since 2007. The page warns about enforcement: speed limits are enforced by radar and cameras throughout the country, and a ticket can follow from going only 2 to 5 km/h over the limit. Different limits may apply at different hours, as posted. At intersections and traffic circles, vehicles and cyclists coming from the right have priority unless signs say otherwise. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05 percent, and 0.02 percent for drivers who have held a license for less than five years.

Visitor status, not residence
The acceptance applies while you are a tourist or visitor. People who move to the Netherlands follow Dutch rules on exchanging a foreign license, which depend on the state and on tax status; the State Department links to a Dutch-language government page for them. This site does not cover those exchanges.
The new-driver limit
The lower 0.02 percent limit applies to anyone who has held a license for under five years, including a young American visitor. Cameras and the dense cycle traffic make Dutch cities hard to drive in; many visitors use a car only between cities. A trip into Germany brings a translation requirement that the Netherlands does not have.
