Driving in South Africa with a US license
South Africa is one of the few countries where the State Department says outright that the permit is not needed.

Driving in South Africa: the full rulesInternational driver's licenses are not required in South Africa, the State Department's page states, and a valid license from any US state or territory is valid for stays of less than six months. South Africa has been a party to the 1949 convention since 1952 and to the 1968 convention since 1977. Traffic drives on the left and the steering wheel is on the right. Road conditions are good, the page says, but traffic deaths are much higher than in the United States, which it attributes to bad driving, weak enforcement, road rage, aggressive driving, distraction and drunk driving. Texting or using a phone without a hands-free device while driving is illegal, and seat belts are required for all passengers. The page was last updated by the Department on August 11, 2025, which the tool and table on this page show with the quotation.

Six months
The six-month limit fits almost every safari or Garden Route trip. A longer stay, or a move, needs a South African license, under rules this site does not cover. Neighboring Namibia sets 90 days on the US license, a shorter limit to keep in mind for cross-border itineraries, which rental contracts also restrict.
Practical points
The pages of the State Department advise against driving at night outside cities, where pedestrians and livestock are hard to see. Fuel stations are attended. A permit is optional, but some rental companies list it among accepted documents, and it can serve as a translation in a country with eleven official languages.
