Driving in Switzerland: the full rules

You may drive in Switzerland on a valid US license for up to one year after your arrival, then you must obtain a Swiss license, according to the State Department's Switzerland page, updated on January 15, 2026. Swiss licenses are issued only on the basis of a valid US license: someone whose US license has expired must take the Swiss driving test. The minimum age for driving is 18. Liability insurance is compulsory and must come from a Swiss insurer. No international permit is listed as a requirement. Switzerland signed the 1949 convention without becoming a party and has been a party to the 1968 convention since 1991. Motorways require a vignette on the windshield, sold online, at gas stations and at the border; rental cars usually have one. Speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 100 on expressways, 80 outside towns and 50 in towns.

Keep the US license valid

The Swiss conversion depends on the US license being valid on the day you apply. A new resident who lets it expire, perhaps because the home state only renews in person, loses the simple route and must pass the test. Plan the renewal before the move. The validity page explains how a license expiry also cuts short any permit.

Mountain driving

Alpine roads can close for long periods in winter, and chains are required in some areas. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05 percent. Fines for traffic violations are large, and police enforce the rules strictly, according to the same page. For a trip that continues to Italy, remember that Italy requires a permit or translation that Switzerland does not.

Questions people ask

Do I need an IDP to drive in Switzerland?

Not according to the State Department, which says a valid US license may be used for up to one year after arrival. A permit is still useful if the trip continues to Italy or Austria, which require a permit or a translation with a US license.

How do I get a Swiss license after a year?

The State Department says Swiss licenses are issued only on the basis of a valid US license, so apply before your US license expires; holders of an expired US license must take the Swiss driving test. The cantonal road traffic office handles the application.

Where does the Switzerland rule on this page come from?

From the State Department's page on Switzerland, last updated by the Department on January 15, 2026. Convention dates come from the United Nations Treaty Collection. The table on this page quotes the State Department's wording as published. If an official text has changed since the date shown, the newer text prevails.
