Driving in Ireland: the full rules

You may use your US driver's license in Ireland for a temporary stay of up to one year, according to the State Department's Ireland page, updated on March 26, 2026. Some insurance and car rental companies may ask for an international driving permit in addition to the license, and the page directs travelers to AAA for one. Residents must apply for an Irish license. Ireland has been a party to the 1949 convention since 1962. Cars drive on the left, and the State Department notes that tourists on the wrong side of the road cause serious accidents every year. Roundabouts replace traffic lights at most intersections, and drivers must yield to traffic already on them. Most rental cars have manual transmissions and automatics can be hard to find, so booking early matters. Off the main highways, roads are narrow, uneven and winding, and more dangerous in summer and on holiday weekends.

When the permit helps in Ireland

Since the law does not require it, the permit matters only if the rental company or your insurer makes it a condition. Read the rental terms: if they list an international permit among the required documents, the counter can refuse the car without one. At $20 plus a photo, it is a small price against that risk. The cost page lists the fees of both issuers.

Northern Ireland is a different licensing system

A drive from Dublin to Belfast crosses into the United Kingdom, where visitors may drive on a US license for 12 months under the rules of the UK page; GOV.UK's checker covers Great Britain, and Northern Ireland has its own authority. Check with the rental company that the car may cross the border and that its insurance covers both sides.

Questions people ask

Do I need an IDP for Ireland?

Not by law for a temporary stay: the State Department says a US license can be used for up to one year. Some insurance and rental companies ask for an international permit in addition, so check the rental terms before you travel. Residents must get an Irish license.

Can I rent an automatic car in Ireland?

Yes, but the State Department warns that most rental cars in Ireland have manual transmissions and automatics can be difficult to find. Book an automatic well ahead, and plan for left-hand traffic and roundabouts, which tourists unused to them find hardest.

Where does the Ireland rule on this page come from?

From the State Department's page on Ireland, last updated by the Department on March 26, 2026. Convention dates come from the United Nations Treaty Collection. The table on this page quotes the State Department's wording as published. If an official text has changed since the date shown, the newer text prevails.
