Driving in Australia: the full rules

Each Australian state and territory has its own rules about driving on a foreign license, the State Department's Australia page explains, including when a visitor might need an international permit. A US license is in English, which removes the most common reason for one. New South Wales shows how the rules have tightened for longer stays: since July 1, 2023, Transport for NSW requires a temporary visa holder who lives in the state continuously for six months or more to convert to a NSW license to keep driving, with a fine of $603 for a first offense and up to $2,200 in court. The same reform lets the state withdraw a visitor's driving privileges after 13 demerit points or a serious offense. Australia has been a party to the 1949 convention since 1954. Traffic drives on the left, speed cameras are everywhere, and limits are in kilometers.

Tourists and working holidays

A short holiday rarely meets any of these limits. A working holiday or a student visa does: in New South Wales the six-month count starts from the day you begin to live there continuously, and short trips away do not reset it. Other states set their own periods, which we have not all read; check the transport authority of the state where you will live. The mini-tool on this page uses the NSW rule.

Speed and distance

The State Department stresses strict enforcement: tickets follow speed camera images, and seat belts are required for every passenger. Distances between towns in the outback are long and roadside services sparse, which matters more for planning than any document.

Amounts in this section are in Australian dollars, as Transport for NSW publishes them.

Questions people ask

Can I drive in Australia on my US license as a tourist?

Yes, generally. The State Department says rules differ by state and territory, and a US license is in English, which avoids the translation requirements some states apply. In New South Wales the main limit concerns temporary visa holders who live there for six months or more.

What is the six-month rule in New South Wales?

Since July 1, 2023, a temporary visa holder who resides in NSW continuously for six months or more must convert to a NSW license to keep driving. Transport for NSW sets a fine of 603 Australian dollars for a first offense and 924 for a second, with up to 2,200 in court.

Where does the Australia rule on this page come from?

From Transport for NSW, Visiting drivers: new rules FAQs, read on November 1, 2026, checked against the State Department's page on Australia (updated August 13, 2026). Convention dates come from the United Nations Treaty Collection. The table on this page quotes the State Department's wording as published. If an official text has changed since the date shown, the newer text prevails.
