Driving in Iceland: the full rules

A valid US driver's license can be used for up to 90 days while visiting Iceland, according to the State Department's Iceland page, updated on May 14, 2026, and the driver must be at least 17 years old. No international permit is mentioned as a requirement. Iceland has been a party to the 1949 Geneva convention since 1983. The page spends far more words on the roads than on documents: less than a third of Iceland's road network is paved, many interior roads are impassable in winter, many bridges are one lane wide, and some tunnels are one lane with pull-out zones. Weather changes fast, and the Department urges every traveler to follow conditions on safetravel.is and road.is. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05 percent, seat belts are required in front and rear seats, and children under six must ride in a car seat.

Counting the 90 days

The limit applies to driving on the US license during a visit. Most trips to Iceland are well under it, but a long stay or a working holiday can reach it; the mini-tool on this page gives the last day for an arrival date. A rental company's own minimum age is often higher than the legal 17: compare it with the young driver calculator.

Interior roads

Mountain roads in the highlands, the F-roads, open only part of the year and many rental contracts exclude them for ordinary cars. River crossings on these roads are a known cause of damage that insurance does not cover. None of this is a license question, but it is the part of the State Department's page that most often changes a plan.

What is the legal driving age in Iceland for visitors?

Where does the Iceland rule on this page come from?

From the State Department's page on Iceland, last updated by the Department on May 14, 2026. Convention dates come from the United Nations Treaty Collection. The table on this page quotes the State Department's wording as published. If an official text has changed since the date shown, the newer text prevails.
